"When drilling the second section of this well, innovative technical measures were explored and adopted. The combination of a new type of high-torque screw, torsional impact and PDC bit drilling tools was used. It took 13.98 days to complete the drilling of plugs and the entire footage of the second section, increasing the speed by 11% compared to the average cycle in the block," said Zou Bo, deputy director and safety supervisor (drilling) of the Tazhong Project Management Department of the Tarim Oilfield's Oil and Gas Field Capacity Construction Division. The well reached a depth of 8,000 meters in only 59.92 days, successfully shortening the domestic 8,000-meter vertical well drilling cycle to within 60 days, effectively guaranteeing the efficient and rapid development of ultra-deep oil and gas resources.

Well Manshen 807 is located within Shaya County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. It is an evaluation well deployed by Tarim Oilfield in Fuman Oilfield, the largest ultra-deep 1-billion-ton oil region in China. The designed well depth is 8,870 meters (vertical depth of 8,662.12 meters), and drilling began on November 30, 2023. The time taken for Well Manshen 807 to reach 8,500 meters was shortened to within 100 days. Compared with the design, it was 47.15 days ahead of schedule, and the drilling speed increased by 29.6%, demonstrating the strong capability of rapid "withdrawal" of oil and gas enriched in ultra-deep layers.

"When drilling the second section of this well, innovative technical measures were explored and adopted. A drilling tool combination of a new type of large-torque screw + torsional impact + PDC bit was used. It took 13.98 days to complete the drilling of plugs and the entire footage of the second section, increasing the speed by 11% compared to the average cycle of the block," said Zou Bo, deputy director of the Tazhong Project Management Department of the Tarim Oilfield's Oil and Gas Field Capacity Construction Division and safety supervisor (drilling). This well reached a depth of 8,000 meters in only 59.92 days, successfully shortening the domestic 8,000-meter vertical well drilling cycle to within 60 days, effectively guaranteeing the efficient and rapid development of ultra-deep oil and gas resources.

Drilling is the biggest cost in the development and construction of oil and gas fields. How to increase the drilling speed and shorten the drilling and completion cycle is directly related to the development benefits and effects of the oil and gas fields. As China's largest ultra-deep oilfield, Fuman Oilfield has complex geological conditions, mainly including engineering difficulties such as the easy creep of salt layers, the easy collapse, leakage and deviation of long open-hole sections. At the same time, it faces high-temperature and high-sulfur problems such as well temperatures exceeding 185 degrees Celsius. The difficulty of drilling construction is rare in the world and unique in China. In recent years, Tarim Oilfield has actively promoted the "Deep Earth Project" and fully "advanced towards the deep part of the earth". It has challenged the deep earth limit with technological breakthroughs, promoting the average cycle of 8,000-meter wells in Fuman Oilfield to about 147 days in 2023, building a high-speed channel for the oil and gas of the "Underground Mount Everest" to reach the surface directly.

Since the beginning of this year, the drilling speed of Fuman Oilfield has sprinted to a new peak and set 11 new records. Three benchmark wells, Well Manshen 805, Well Manshen 807, and Well Manshen 809, have been drilled. Compared with the design cycle, all were more than 40 days ahead of schedule, and the drilling speed increased by more than 25%. Especially, the completion cycle of Well Manshen 807 broke through 100 days, enriching the drilling speed increase template for ultra-deep wells in Tarim and providing a powerful engineering and technical guarantee for the efficient construction and production of the 1-billion-ton oil region.

Drilling not only needs to be fast but also needs to be of good quality. To improve the contribution rate of oil and gas from new ultra-deep drilling wells, Tarim Oilfield has carried out targeted scientific and technological research, continuously promoted the integration of geology and engineering, Party A and Party B, and production and operation. It has continuously strengthened a series of revolutionary speed-up measures such as technical measures, production organization, and safety management, and fully implemented the "three enhancements" of personnel quality, technical level, and management ability, boosting various drilling records to constantly achieve "acceleration", providing advanced ideas and experience for China in the aspect of speed-up technology for ultra-deep well drilling.

Fuman Oilfield is currently the largest ultra-deep marine facies fault-controlled fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoir discovered in China, with oil and gas resources exceeding 1 billion tons. The reservoirs are generally buried at ultra-deep layers ranging from 7,500 meters to 9,000 meters. Since the major discovery of Well Manshen 1 in 2020, Tarim Oilfield has gathered the strength of the entire oilfield to accelerate development and construction. In 2023, the annual output of oil and gas exceeded 4 million tons, becoming the oilfield with the fastest production increase in the deep ground area in China. It has created a new growth pole for the increase of crude oil reserves and production in China and also erected a "Top Ten Super Project of Central Enterprises" in the "Sea of Death".

According to the plan, by the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan", Fuman Oilfield will be built into an ultra-deep and large oilfield with an annual oil and gas production of 5 million tons, continuously enhancing the confidence and strength to firmly hold the energy bowl.
